NSI is a full member of the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and subscribes to the World Trade Organization /Technical Barriers to Trade (WTO)/TBT Annex 3 Code of Good Practice for the Preparation, Adoption and Application of Standards.
- Classification of Standards

Namibia's standards regime consists of compulsory and voluntary standards. Under the Standards Act 2005, the Minister of Economic Affairs has the power to declare any standard regulation compulsory for a commodity or service. NSI Standards are compulsory for fishery products and all fish exports have to carry the NSI label.
