The road network consists in 106,000 km of excellent quality and modern roads, of which 2,200 km are operated by ASFINAG, the publicly owned corporation which plans, finances, builds, maintains and collects tolls for the Austrian highways. More than half of the road freight just transits through Austria, which constitutes one of the trading hubs between western and eastern Europe. In 2019, the transport volume carried out by Austrian and foreign road freight vehicles on the country's roads amounted to 598 million tonnes and increased by 4.0% year-on-year (Statistics Austria).
Austria is a landlocked country. However, the Danube is a communication line of an international importance. Goods transport using this means increased significantly after the opening of the Rhine-Main-Danube canal. In 2019 waterside trans-shipments by all ports on the Austrian section of the Danube amounted to 7.0 million ton (up by 13.6% y-o-y) .
According to Statistics Austria, in rail freight transport, a total of 102.6 million tonnes of freight was transported on the country’s railway network by all domestic and foreign railway operating companies in 2019.
In 2019, a total of 247,200 tonnes of freight were transported on 319,945 flight movements in commercial aviation via the six Austrian international airports (including transit).
